Sit Back and Get Rich

I recently came across the phrase “sit back and get rich,” and it struck a chord with me. What does it mean? To me, it’s about self-care, self-preservation, and self-discipline. As a Black man, I’ve often found myself focused on collective progress—on lifting up the community as a whole. And for a while, it felt like we were on the brink of something great.

We were so close to thriving, especially with the hope of Kamala Harris leading the way. But here we are, once again, struggling. Part of the reason? Some of us couldn’t believe in the Promised Land when it was within reach. It felt too good to be true, so they allowed themselves to be deceived—giving away their opportunities to those who don’t have our best interests at heart.

It’s frustrating and disheartening to be so close, yet so far away from what we’ve worked for. But instead of dwelling on what’s lost, my family and I are choosing a new path. We’re hunkering down, focusing on survival, and positioning ourselves for a brighter future.

We’ve decided to stop wasting energy on things beyond our control and redirect that energy toward what we can control: our resources, our well-being, and our family’s future. Right now, that means being laser-focused and disciplined. It’s not about selfishness—it’s about survival. We can’t afford to carry the weight of others who are set on self-destruction.

Not everyone is meant to reach the Promised Land. That’s a hard truth, but one we’ve come to accept. Our priority now is to shield ourselves and ensure that our daughter has a fighting chance. We may not make it there ourselves, but if we do what we’re supposed to—if we survive and lay the groundwork—she might.

This is a time for focus, not frustration; for discipline, not distraction. It’s not about giving up on the collective—it’s about ensuring that those who come after us have a chance to thrive. And that starts with survival today.
