I finally sat down to reconcile my bank accounts for tax season. While I dreaded the process at first, it turned out to be surprisingly therapeutic and incredibly eye-opening.
The biggest shocker? Those small monthly automatic payments really add up. Companies like Spotify, Meta, and Amazon are raking it in, and I’ve been letting it happen without much thought. Speaking of Amazon, I couldn’t believe how much I’ve spent there effortlessly over time. When I added up all my purchases, I found myself asking, “Where are all these things I bought?”
Then there were the essentials—gas and groceries. Those expenses were painfully high, a harsh reminder of how inflation is hitting hard. On top of that, I noticed how much money I’ve wasted on snacks at work. It’s amazing how easy it is to mindlessly spend hard-earned money, yet so difficult to save it.
But despite all the eye-popping numbers, I’m glad I took the time to do this. Knowing exactly where my money is going feels empowering. It’s clear I need to make changes—starting with canceling those automatic payments I barely use and cutting back on unnecessary purchases.
Moving forward, I’ve resolved to reconcile my accounts regularly. Staying on top of my finances will help me track where my money is going on a daily basis and curb those bad spending habits.
If you’re wondering why you’re feeling broke, I highly recommend taking the time to review your bank account. It’s an eye-opening experience that can help you get back on track.
Good luck with your taxes this season—and here’s to taking control of our finances!
