The Comfort Trap: Staying Fit as a Dad Who Lives in Sweats

As a Dad:

One thing I’ve learned as a full-time dad and entrepreneur is the beauty—and challenge—of wearing comfortable clothing. Hoodies, sweatshirts, joggers—they’ve become my go-to wardrobe. I mean, I don’t have a 9-to-5 that requires a suit and tie, and honestly, that’s one of the perks of this lifestyle.

But here’s the catch: comfort can be deceiving. It’s so easy to slip into a routine where grooming and fitness take a back seat. One thing I’ve realized is how much wearing suits or fitted clothes helps you keep track of your body. When your pants or shirt feel snug, it’s like a built-in alarm system telling you, “Hey, time to move more and eat less!”

In sweats? That alarm doesn’t go off as easily. You’ve got to be intentional—like hopping on the scale or scheduling workouts—to stay on top of your health.

There are moments when I have to dress up, whether it’s for a wedding, a nice dinner with my wife, or any event that calls for my tailored suits. I admit, I sometimes feel nervous slipping into one of those fitted pieces. When it fits like it’s supposed to, it’s a relief—a sign that I’m keeping things in check. On the flip side, if it’s snug, that’s my cue to make adjustments.

So while I love the freedom and comfort of my everyday gear, I stay mindful of my fitness. Health is wealth, after all.

What about you, dads? Do you live in comfort clothes like me? Do you notice how it impacts your awareness of your weight and fitness?

P.S. Be on the lookout for Social Dad DC Comfort—my upcoming clothing brand for dads who still got it. Comfort and style, because we deserve both!
