As I prepare for my annual trip to St. Lucia Carnival, I received a message from a brother expressing interest in joining the experience. Our conversation started off mainly via text, detailing what the trip entails, but as the messages went back and forth, I sensed some confusion. So, I decided to pick up the phone and give him a call.
This brother, a professional working for a major financial firm, was surprisingly available to chat despite his demanding schedule. What started as a simple clarification about the trip evolved into a deeper conversation about life, community, and the pressures we face as Black men.
He shared his work challenges—how he constantly feels the need to work ten times harder just to keep his head above water. It’s a sentiment many of us can relate to, especially in high-pressure corporate environments. The weight of proving yourself again and again can take a toll.
As our conversation unfolded, we touched on family. I shared that I have a six-year-old daughter, and he told me about his 14-year-old in boarding school. He gave me some valuable advice: cherish these moments now because when my daughter gets to her teenage years, she might not want anything to do with me! It was a lighthearted reminder to stay present, but it also led us back to the heart of the conversation—the importance of balance and prioritizing what truly matters.
He shared a sobering story about a lawyer around our age, a successful brother who was doing well professionally but tragically passed away alone in his home. No wife. No kids. No one even knew he was gone for days. It was a stark reminder that success without wellness, connection, and purpose can be hollow.
We talked about the need to step back, reassess, and create an exit strategy when the grind becomes unsustainable. He emphasized the importance of taking care of our mind, body, and spirit—not just for ourselves, but for the loved ones who depend on us. I told him that finding your next move starts with looking within, understanding what truly matters, and having the courage to pursue it. Yes, the road will get bumpy, and yes, your world may turn upside down, but living your truth is the key to a fulfilling life.
Before we knew it, hours had passed. The logistics of the Carnival trip took a back seat as we delved into the challenges of corporate life, fatherhood, and how to thrive—not just survive. When we finally ended the call, we promised to have more conversations like this. Because as brothers, we don’t talk enough about the struggles we face and how to rise above them together.
This conversation wasn’t just about a trip to St. Lucia—it was a reminder of how vital it is to check in, support one another, and prioritize what truly matters. Life isn’t just about the hustle. It’s about connection, purpose, and leaving a legacy worth cherishing.
Let’s continue to build, thrive, and live boldly. And if you’re ready to join me on this journey—whether it’s to Carnival or toward a more meaningful life—let’s talk. 646-481-2550
