As 2024 came to a close, many of us took time to reflect on where we stand in life. Have we accomplished the goals we set for ourselves? Did we reach our health milestones? Are our finances where we want them to be? Ultimately, we find ourselves asking: Are we truly happy with where we are?
This self-assessment often leads to resolutions—a promise to ourselves to do better in the year ahead. But let’s be honest: while a few of us stick to these goals throughout the year, most of us lose momentum within a few months, if not sooner. I’ll admit, I don’t always quit on my goals outright, but I tend to lose focus as life’s immediate challenges take center stage.
So how do we stay consistent and committed to our yearly goals? For me, the answer lies in keeping it simple. Instead of focusing on long-term goals that feel overwhelming, I break them down into small, actionable daily tasks.
Here’s my approach: I use the notes app on my phone (the same one I’m using to write this) to create a list of the simplest daily goals. These can be as straightforward as:
• Wake up at 5 a.m. tomorrow.
• Set the timer for tea or coffee at the same time each day.
• Go to bed by 10 p.m.
I’ve realized that the main reason I lose focus on my goals is the lack of consistent daily habits that align with success. Once I started prioritizing small, manageable tasks, I noticed that the bigger, more daunting goals became much easier to tackle.
Changing habits we’ve held onto for years isn’t easy—it’s one of the hardest things to do. But it is possible. The key is to simplify the process, adapt a growth mindset, and truly want the change bad enough.
So as we step into 2025, setting our resolutions and crafting our vision boards, let’s remember to keep it simple. Focus on setting small, achievable goals that deliver immediate rewards and build momentum. Commit to these steps daily, and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish—not just this year, but in the years to come.
Happy New Year, fam! Let’s make 2025 the year we surprise ourselves.
